Day 27 on the site

Wednesday 5th of June

It is only 10 days to go and we had to reschedule the work according to the material deliveries. Organization is crucial now since different parts of the building must be developed at the same time, the roof, the render, the furniture and the outdoor area.

With the walls already finished, it was time to tackle the roof which was a laborious process. The brackets were redesigned on site. We made them wider to make sure that we drilled them to the concrete wall. We measured and marked the placement of the expansion bolts that needed to be hammered in place. Then the brackets were placed and the bolts were grinded to have space enough for the wooden beams. The wood for the beams is first being planned in the workshop and the grove of one side is cut to fit the brackets.

Two days ago, we started with the rendering of the walls. The color was decided through a voting process amongst many options. We had more than ten samples which resulted in a polemic choice of an orange-clay color similar to the earth on site. The next day we took two hours to reproduce the color with the red and yellow pigments we had, mixed with white cement and fine sand. After the first wall was rendered, we ran out of red pigment and the new order was of a different shade of red. That translated into three more hours of mixing for the new badge. Nevertheless, the local workers that are helping us are very efficient.

Olav is in charge of another team for the furniture of the dinning and kitchen areas. For now, the team is in charge of casting the concrete sink at the entrance of the Teaching Restaurant. They have done the formwork on place, and it’s ready to be casted.
